Reds Face Railwaymen Trip

Yes, the football season isn't that far off again, with the first round draw for the Carling Cup being made on Friday. While we've been labelled as the giant killing side this season, there's every chance that things could completely swivel the other way in this competition with the draw pitting us against League One side Crewe. Even though The Railwaymen only just missed out on relegation to League Two by the skin of their teeth, our away form from last season suggests that this game could be fairly tight and a potential banana skin for Simon Davey.

Last season, the competition brought us our first taste or Premiership opponents though. After scraping through against Darlington in a gritty 2-1 win at Oakwell, we were rewarded with a trip to St James Park to face Newcastle United. For some reason we didn't take the tie seriously at all though, with Davey fielding a weakened side that really didn't fare a chance against a Magpies team who included the likes of Michael Owen, Alan Smith and Obafemi Martins. However, as all who attended that game will vouch, we put on a very good display considering and our "reserve" team did us very proud.

Our recent meetings with Crewe haven't been very successful and they're without doubt a side we've struggled against. In the last fixture we lost 2-1 at Oakwell - with that team including the likes of Matthew Ghent, Brian O'Callaghan and Kevin Donovan. Thankfully, things have moved on a lot since then!

With no Premiership sides yet in the competition, there aren't any mouth-watering ties so to speak. The full draw reads as follows:
